The IAFC’s Wildfire Programs equip fire departments, emergency managers, community leaders, and residents with the knowledge, tools, and partnerships needed to reduce wildfire risk and build safer, more resilient communities.
Through nationally recognized programs, including Ready, Set, Go! (RSG!) and Fire Department Exchange (FDX), the IAFC provides practical resources, self-paced courses, webinars, hands-on training, mentorship, financial assistance, and technical support. These opportunities help fire departments, public safety agencies, and partner organizations strengthen local preparedness and take action before wildfire strikes.
Ready, Set, Go! (RSG) Program
The RSG Program empowers fire departments to lead community wildfire preparedness through trusted outreach, education, and engagement. The program provides customizable tools and resources that help departments encourage residents to take personal responsibility, prepare their homes and families, and take early action before and during a wildfire.
Fire Department Exchange (FDX) Program
The FDX Program is a three-day, in-person learning experience that connects fire service professionals from across the country to share knowledge, solve challenges, and strengthen wildfire preparedness in their communities. Through facilitated discussions, hands-on exercises, and peer-to-peer collaboration, gain new perspectives and identify practical strategies to implement in your community.
Evacuation Management Course
The Evacuation Management Course is a 2-day, in-person course that brings law enforcement, fire, emergency managers, and local government partners together to build crisis leadership, coordination, and decision-making skills for effective large-scale wildfire evacuation preparedness and response through expert instruction and interactive exercises.
Grants & Technical Assistance
The IAFC Wildfire Programs offers free, direct financial assistance and expert technical support to help local fire departments and public-safety agencies take action on wildfire resilience.
Direct Assistance Program
Selected departments receive funding for practical mitigation activities tailored to local needs and wildfire risks.
Technical Assistance
Selected departments work directly with IAFC subject-matter experts to assess local needs, strengthen stakeholder collaboration, engage the community, and develop practical wildfire-resilience strategies.
Wildland-Urban Interface Mentorship Program
The Wildland-Urban Interface Mentorship Program connects local fire-department leadership with experienced wildland-fire subject-matter experts for peer-to-peer guidance, planning, and operational support.
Free Online Training
The IAFC Wildfire Programs offers two free self-paced, interactive courses, online training through IAFC’s Academy.
WUI Chief’s Guide
This course provides practical strategies and tools to help departments strengthen wildfire preparedness and community resilience.
Fire Adapted Communities
This training provides an introduction to the wildland fire threat and an overview of key concepts in community fire adaptation for fire and emergency response personnel operating in areas with wildland fire risk.
